Gah. I really wish Jezebel would chill out with their hatred for Bret Easton Ellis. It doesn't take a whole lot of time to find out that he's very open about creating a public persona that isn't actually representative of who he is for artistic reasons. I mean, the guy is a satirist, whose whole style as a writer is to describe some very extreme events and beliefs in a way that is completely without affect. His public persona goes hand in hand with this. It's the same reason why he won't directly classify his sexuality, because as he has said, if you knew his sexual orientation, it would skew how you read his work. All of this is part of his work, as a writer. There is absolutely no reason to take what he is saying as gospel and to lambast him left and right for it. It's part of a satirical statement he is making.

Also, for people saying that he's lived a charmed life and hasn't experienced the kind of bullying he's criticizing, that's not true. Ellis spent his entire adolescence being terrorized and bullied by his own father. I find it upsetting that he can just be dismissed so flippantly as being an asshole when he's so much more complicated than that. Should you have any interest, this interview [www.nytimes.com] and his novel "Lunar Park" might shed more light on the subject.
