Over 5,500 pages of emails from former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton were released by the State Department today, but fell short of a judge’s order that 82 percent of them would be made public by the end of the year. Around 3,100 emails, dated from 2009 to 2013, were included in the latest release. One of the them references a very memorable photo of Clinton in which she is shown wearing sunglasses while she checks her BlackBerry.
USA Today reports that the email, with the subject line “Photo gone viral!”, was forwarded to Clinton from her chief of staff, Cheryl Mills. “Why now? That was on the way to Libya?” Clinton replied. “You look cute,” Mills responded. The photo spurned countless memes and a popular Tumblr called “Texts from Hillary Clinton.”
The department acknowledged the shortage in a statement. “We have worked diligently to come as close to the goal as possible, but with the large number of documents involved and the holiday schedule, we have not met the goal this month,” it read. “To narrow that gap, the State Department will make another production of former Secretary Clinton’s email sometime next week.”
Other emails include a flow chart that displayed who had riding privileges with Clinton, as well as a very grim birthday greeting.
