Mom Charged With Child Abandonment Was Interviewing For Job Yards Away

Latest

A single mother named Laura Browder is facing child abandonment charges in Houston, Texas, after leaving her 6-year-old daughter and 2-year-old son in a food court while she interviewed for a job 30 yards away.

Browder says she didn’t have time to arrange for childcare before the interview and during the conversation her children were always in her line of sight. When she returned from the interview, during which she accepted a position, a police officer arrested her. It is unclear whether the arrest will impact her job offer.

Browder released the following statement:

“This was very unfortunate this happened. I had an interview with a very great company with lots of career growth. I am a college student and mother of two. I would never put my name, background or children in harm’s way intentionally. I have a promising future ahead of me regardless of what the media tries to portray me as. A judge released my children to me knowing that I was a good mother who just made a not-so-smart decision. My children weren’t even 30 yards away from me. I fed them and sat there with them until it was time to meet my interviewer. This, too, will pass and I am not concerned with [what] outsiders have to say or what they think.

Child Protective Services is reportedly beginning an investigation.

Update: A previous version of this article said Browder was 30 feet away. This has been corrected to 30 yards to match Browder’s statement.
