When Mitt Romney talks about how much he loves "America the Beautiful," he probably doesn't know that the song was written by poet Katharine Lee Bates, a lesbian feminist who spoke out against greed. According to the Times, her original third verse was,

America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
Till selfish gain no longer stain
The banner of the free!

So, when do we get to see Kathy Bates play her in a biopic?

I really wish "America the Beautiful" were the national anthem instead of the ol' belligerent and impossible to sing "Star Spangled Banner". I like how it speaks of the natural beauty of the nation and now how much ass we kick, I like the idea of asking God to "shed grace" instead of assuming that we have it (and I'm an atheist), I like how it acknowledges imperfections and the struggle to overcome them, and I think the line about "alabaster cities gleam undimmed by human tears" is poignant and bittersweet. Now I like it even more for that verse.

Then again I think "O, Canada" should be replaced with "Rock You Like A Hurricane".
