Miss USA Sarah Rose Summers Apologizes for Comments About Fellow Miss Universe Contestants' English

Latest

Sarah Rose Summers, aka Miss USA, faced intense criticism on Wednesday when a video recorded on Miss Colombia Valeria Morales’ Instagram Live showed the former Miss Nebraska making fun of Miss Universe contestants for not speaking fluent English. In the clip, Summers mockingly imitates H’Hen Niê (Miss Vietnam) and comments on Rern Sinat (Miss Cambodia).

On Thursday, Summers, 24, apologized for her comments in an Instagram post that read, in part:

“In a moment where I intended to admire the courage of a few of my sisters, I said something that I now realize can be perceived as not respectful, and I apologize. My life, friendships, and career revolve around me being a compassionate and empathetic woman. I would never intend to hurt another. I am grateful for opportunities to speak with Nat, Miss Cambodia, and H’Hen, Miss Vietnam, directly about this experience. These are the moments that matter most to me.”

TMZ also talked to Summers’ mom, Desiree, who defended her daughter, saying, “She in no way meant any harm. she doesn’t have a mean bone in her body.” She said that in imitating Miss Vietnam Summers “was just recreating how Miss Vietnam acts whence doesn’t understand what someone is saying. She wasn’t trying to mock her.”
