@mepo: Are you speaking specifically to Judaism? Because certainly the tradition of converting in the Western world is nothing new, neither is it inherently female— Jews converted to Catholicsm en masse. Spouses converted to either Catholicsm or Protestantism for a spouse— usually the person who converted was the one who entered the marriage with less financial assets or, like today, less personal connection to religion. I have yet to see evidence it was a subjugation of the female.
