Meats Are for Boys, Veggies Are for Girls, Nonsense Is for Everyone

There may be lots of benefits to living as a vegetarian, but apparently looking like a man (whatever that means) is not one of them. A new study found that people associate meat with manliness. The researchers did a number of experiments that explored people's metaphors about food, and they found the people rated meat as being more masculine than vegetables. That's funny, since so many vegetables are phallic in shape, but whatever. The study also found that people saw male meat eaters as being more masculine than those who didn't eat meat. I guess soy substitutes are for sissies, or something dumb like that. Hence, men are less likely to be vegetarians because they don't want to compromise their manhood, or as the research paper put it:

To the strong, traditional, macho, bicep-flexing, All-American male, red meat is a strong, traditional, macho, bicep-flexing, All-American food. Soy is not. To eat it, they would have to give up a food they saw as strong and powerful like themselves for a food they saw as weak and wimpy.

Looks like it's time for the vegetable producers of America to launch a marketing campaign centered around making kale and carrots look manly. Real men eat radishes, etc.

There's always been gendered eating.

Men eat steak - women eat salads.

Men like hearty meals, out of a can! - women like dainty meals, beautifully presented.

Men eat a lot - women eat little (unless of course they're sad!).

Eating is physical for men (they eat when they're hungry, from working so hard!). Eating is emotional for women (they're never hungry, really, only sad)

Men eat whatever they want - Women are always on a diet

We get such confusing signals - men say things like "I like a woman that can eat!" but everything we see tells us men like women who never eat.
