Maryland Republicans Accidentally Promoted a Porn Website But Wait There's a Twist!

Politics

On Monday, the Capital Gazette reported that for months, the Republican National Committee’s website listed the wrong Twitter handle for the Maryland state Party—sending people instead to an account for the website Sexy Car Babes.

Oops! Here’s how that happened: In January of this year, officials in Maryland’s Republican Party changed their Twitter account from @mdreps to @mdgop, but neglected to tell the national committee of the change. Sometime later that month, their old handle was taken over by Sexy Car Babes, which quickly began tweeting out links to its website, sexycarbabes.com, which the Gazette noted dryly is “a website that has nothing to do with cars.”

Despite the change in ownership of @mdreps, some Twitter users continued to use the old handle for the state Party. On March 24, for example, the account of the conservative website Red Maryland sent out this tweet:

LOL!!!! Cue the eye-rolling!!!

But wait—before we are all overcome by our schadenfreude, I am sad to report that internet properties of all ideological stripes are vulnerable to hijacking by Sexy Car Babes.

Consider the fate of laborrightsblog.typepad.com—sometime between the end of December 2017 and this March, the website turned from a blog celebrating international labor rights solidarity to—yes, you guessed it—yet another vehicle (no pun intended!!) for Sexy Car Babes.

Wayback Machine charted the decline of this website. This is how the site appeared at the end of 2017:

This is laborrightsblog.typepad.com today:

I look forward to Jezebel.com’s eventual takeover by Sexy Car Babes.
