Maria Bamford Says DiagYESis to Diagnosis in the Trailer for Her New Netflix Comedy

The trailer for Maria Bamford’s upcoming Netflix comedy Lady Dynamite has finally arrived and—based on this short two minutes of weird, honest, and funny footage—the series will be a perfect encapsulation of Bamford’s well (and deservedly) adored humor.

The 13-episode sitcom—produced by South Park’s Pam Brady and Arrested Development’s Mitchell Hurwitz—is a surreal look into Bamford’s life as she, following brief success in Hollywood, has a nervous breakdown, is hospitalized, returns to her family home in Duluth, Minnesota, and eventually rebuilds her life. The comedian has publicly spoken about her struggles with mental illness in her sketches and standup acts for years (check out her webseries The Maria Bamford Show, if you haven’t already), but the act—refreshing and truthful as it is—remains as poignant and striking as ever.

Comedy fans will delight in seeing an array of familiar faces (including Ana Gasteyer, Bridget Everett, Lennon Parham, Andy Daly, Jason Mantzoukas, and—huh—Dean Cain) appear in the trailer, but ultimately, the draw of Lady Dynamite is 100 percent Maria.

The series premieres on Netflix on May 20.

Yay! Same premise as her web series a few years back (which I enjoyed very much!), but will be nice to see this story told with a bigger budget and better production value. Woohoo!
