Malala Yousafzai's Book Party Gets Cancelled in Pakistan

Organizers were forced to cancel an event in Peshawar, Pakistan celebrating the release of “I Am Malala,” the autobiography of the heroic education activist Malala Yousafzai, after they were alerted to several safety concerns and were told that police would not be providing them with security.

Dr Hussain of [Bacha Khan Education Trust] said that police had informed organisers they could not provide security for the programme. But he added that political pressure had also been put on the university administration to suspend the event.

“Two ministers of the KP government put pressure on the university administration to call off the programme. Some important state functionaries also made telephone calls to senior professors of the Area Study Centre,” he told BBC Urdu.

“I Am Malala” has already been banned in Pakistani private schools and is a great source of political unrest. Many have expressed discontent at the cancellation of the book party, but Shah Farman, Information Minister of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, has only stated, “It is true that we stopped them and there were many reasons for that.”

Malala, who now lives in Birmingham, UK, was not planning on attending the event.
