I just don't have that much pity for these kids. I started working as soon as I could and shortly thereafter, my mom got a severe back injury and went on disability. So my $200 a week paycheck was helping pay for groceries and utilities. And occasionally, I got to go out with my friends.
I don't understand why it's so extraordinary that a 16 year old would go and get a job. And in my town of middle to upper middle class people where people could (and probably do) not have after school jobs, they most definitely do. Maybe the kids aren't out doing hard labor but they're definitely the people staffing our local movie theaters, par-3 golf course pro-shop and every conceivable fast food joint.
