Teens across the internet are bruising their faces in order to recreate Kylie Jenner’s obviously enhanced lips. The ill-advised #KylieJennerChallenge caught on with a small group of bored, improperly supervised youth who documented their disasters by posting traumatizing pictures on social media.
The challenge, it seems, involves sucking on a cup until your lips are swollen—which is basically a bootleg version of this monstrosity. The result was a lot of gross and terrifying facial trauma (via Complex).
Let’s ignore for a minute the fact that Kylie Jenner did not, in fact, invent the concept of full lips and that full lips have been a beautiful and highly desirable trait for women of color since as long as we’ve inhabited the planet.
Kylie Jenner is always careful to say that she “hasn’t gone under the knife” in order to achieve the miracle feat of tripling the size of her lips in a very short period of time. It is exactly the kind of smart-but-dumb doublespeak that the Kardashian family does so well. Sure, injecting your lips with collagen is not technically plastic surgery, but everyone on earth is not actually dumber than you, Kylie. WE KNOW WHAT’S GOING ON.
I will say, I find the legitimacy of many of the disgusting, forced lip tumors found associated with the hashtag to be a bit dubious, but the fact that that even one teen attempted this is a problem.
Kylie Jenner certainly has some positive things going for her and at age seventeen, she’s got a whole hell of a lot of growing up to do. However, let us all remember that her life is not real life. The bubble of Kardashian sorcery and E! Television-fueled delirium is not something that can be replicated—therefore, decisions should not be made in an attempt to mirror these people in any way.
Teens, Kylie Jenner is not someone you should be taking practical, real-life cues from. Stay in school. Don’t date 25 year-old rappers with children. And do not inject things into your face or cause temporary trauma to your face in order to look likes someone or something that you’re not. This is probably the only advice you need to become a reasonably competent adult.
And for those of you who were born having already naturally achieved the #KylieJennerChallenge, feel free to laugh.
