Let's Have a Virtual Karaoke Party!

Latest

The karaoke channel on Vevo (yes, that’s a thing that exists) recently released the list of their top most watched karaoke videos of 2013 and, not unlike a lot of 2013 lists, it heavily features Beyoncé.

Winning the number one spot of most watched karaoke video is Billboard Woman of the Year P!nk with “Just Give Me a Reason,” followed by Queen B with “Listen” and “Love on Top,” “Counting Stars” by One Republic, “Everything Has Changed” by Taylor Swift (ft. Ed Sheeran), Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines,” “Don’t Take the Girl” by Tim McGraw, “Iris” by Goo Goo Dolls (lol), Judy Garland’s “Over the Rainbow” and, rounding out the list, “Say My Name” by Destiny’s Child.

Of course, these are just the karaoke songs that you can sing off your computer (and if you have yet to spend a lonely evening that way, I highly suggest you do it). The most popular songs of actual karaoke bars could be entirely different and — heck! — your own personal list of top karaoke songs is probably pretty great on its own.

One of the best parts of working at Gawker Media, besides sitting across from Nick Denton’s Iron Throne every day, is that everyone in the office really loves karaoke and we go do it together relativey often. It’s pretty crazy and fun to see what a wide range of tastes your coworkers have. For example, I have never seen Dodai miss a chance to sing “I Want You to Want Me,” Tracie always goes for Mariah and Lindy slays Disney songs at every karaoke bar she steps into. PERSONALLY, I like to start with Sondheim, do a 180-degree turn for a little Guns N’ Roses and then 180 BACK AGAIN to something more folk-y like The Carpenters. (Yes, I’m THAT GOOD.)

So what’s you go-to karaoke song? Something ’90s-cool like “Shoop”? Or eenage nostalgic like the Backstreet Boys? Karaoke-traditional like “Total Eclipse of the Heart”? Weepy country like “Crazy”? Or maybe you’re the person who sings something slow and sad and kills the energy of the entire room. Whatever it is, name your song! Name your style! Maybe even post a lyric video so that we can hang out and have a virtual karaoke party in the comments.
