Larry David On Hamilton: Most White People Just Say They Like It to Sound Hip

Larry David, the very white creator of very white shows Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm, has seen Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton. And guess what: he loved it! Thought it was “amazing,” actually. But in an interview with Mike Lupica, David shared his opinion that most white people (again, not him) just like it to sound hip.

Said David:

“[Hamilton] was pretty amazing, but I have a feeling there are a lot of white people who are saying they are completely blown away even though they didn’t really understand half of the things the people on stage were saying. They just want to solidify their liberal bona fides and how cool they are: ‘Yea, I love Hamilton. Yea I get it, I’m hip.’”

Somehow David has managed to condescend just about everyone with that remark—from Miranda and his cast (by suggesting that most people can’t “understand” rap) to the many fans who adoringly know the show by heart (by suggesting they’d only say they like a show starring almost exclusively people of color to sound hip).

Bold words, considering they’re from a man has only cast a person of color in a non-token role...once?

Listen, I’m not defending Larry.

There are a number of white people who have dismissed rap and hip hop as like, an entire genre. And those same white people are falling over themselves to praise Hamilton. And it does make you raise an eyebrow.
