Kerry Washington to Star in a Romantic Comedy

Kerry Washington will be taking off her Olivia Pope coats and stepping into a new role on the big screen. The Scandal lead will star in an upcoming romantic comedy titled Is He The One.

Deadline broke the story of Kerry Washington’s first film since Django Unchained.

The comedy begins with a woman dressing for her wedding, and it ends with a walk down the aisle. Washington plays the bride and the story is told in flashbacks that cycle through the three major relationships of her life. The big question: who’s at the end of that final walk, waiting for her at the altar?

Admittedly, the synopsis sounds a liiiiitle on the trite side, so the quality of the writing is going to be very important. The film was written by DJ Richardson and Michelle Morgan—who penned the 2012 Kristin Wiig vehicle, Girl Most Likely.

Is He The One will be directed by Malcolm D Lee who was behind The Best Man and The Best Man Holiday, which was a was a certified box-office and critical success.

One aspect of this project that will be particularly interesting is whether or not it will be a quote unquote, black film—that is, a film with a primarily black cast.

Kerry Washington is a huge mainstream star following the success of Scandal. Some have suggested that pairing her primarily with white men on the show is a strategic move so as not to alienate a white audience. I’m curious to see what the races of her romantic interests in Is He The One will be, not because I particularly care one way or another, but because it will likely heavily dictate how the film is marketed and potentially its overall box-office success.

Regardless, I am very much here for any attempts at reviving the romcom genre because it would be nice to mix up my monthly viewings of Clueless with something else.
