Kathie Lee Gifford Asks Widower Martin Short How His Wife Is Doing

Comedian and class act Martin Short was with his wife Nancy Dolman for 36 years before she passed away from ovarian cancer in 2010. Unfortunately, not a single researcher informed Kathie Lee of Dolman's death, leading to a heartbreakingly awkward situation on this morning's Today Show where the actor was appearing to promote his new film Madagascar 3. During the interview, a hapless Gifford asked Short how he manages to keep his marriage happy and romantic. Luckily, he handled the gaffe with grace and aplomb.

About 2 weeks after my mom died, I was having one of those silly fake arguments with a friend of my boyfriend (now husband)

Me: Eeww, moldy cheese tart

Him: You're a moldy cheese tart

Me: Your face is a moldy cheese tart

Him: Your mom is a moldy cheese tart

Me: Dude, my mom just died...

Him: (continuing in the exact same tone he'd be using the whole conversation) Yeah, I just realized that. I'm sorry.

I wish I could explain better how he delivered it. It was hilarious and exactly what I needed.

That said, I can't watch this clip. I <3 Martin Short, and even thinking about him being sad makes me sad.
