Well, at least they convict police officers of rape on one of the coasts. A California jury rejected a police officer's claim that he kidnapped and raped a woman because the Zoloft made him do it and convicted him of all seven charges. I'm not sure which feeling I'm feeling more strongly — schadenfreude over this evil guy's fate or awe over the absolute cluelessness of his excuse for his crime. My feelings are having a fight!
Ex Marine, ex cop, and enduring dickbag Anthony Nicholas Orban stood accused of kidnapping a waitress at gunpoint in a mall parking lot in 2010. He sexually assaulted her in a nearby self-storage parking lot and told his victim that he was going to take her out into the desert. She escaped when he became distracted by an incoming call on his cell phone.
According to Orban's attorneys, he has no memory of the event because he had been on a regimen of Zoloft at the time, and somehow adjusting his dosage caused him to have a psychotic break. He doesn't even remember raping her, he swears!
Anti depressants (or any drug for mental illness, really) do not fuck around, and people who have deviated from a doctor's proposed dosage of the stuff can and have suffered serious problems. But there's absolutely no science to support the notion that Zoloft sometimes turns people into unstoppable rape machines. Orban's defense team featured an "expert witness" who testified that the man was unconscious at the time of the rape, but that expert witness has spent much of his career criticizing psychotropic medications. The scientific consensus on Zoloft is that it's not the pill equivalent of Grow A Rape.
The same jurors who convicted Orban will now determine whether he was sane at the time of the attack. If he's found to be sane, he'll probably go to jail for a long, long time; if not, he'll go to a state run mental institution.
The LA Times notes that during Orban's month-long trial, his victim's gripping, detailed recount of the attack was the most compelling evidence presented. Her name hasn't been released because she's the victim of a sex crime, but whoever she is, she's got giant metal ovaries, and I hope that she's able to spend the rest of her life living without fear.
