In Carol, Cate Blanchett & Rooney Mara Want to Hook Up But They Can't

CATE BLANCHETT IS BACK, EVERYONE—and she’s playing a married woman who really wants to run off with a younger shop girl but can’t, thanks to society.

In Carol, Blanchett and Rooney Mara, who plays a department store worker named Therese, are in love during the 1950s but Blanchett is unfortunately married to Kyle Chandler, who will always be known as Friday Night Lights’ Coach Taylor. Cue the sad “But we can’t do this!” scenes and emotional stares from across crowded rooms.

The film, according to Autostraddle, is based on Patricia Highsmith’s pulp novel The Price Of Salt; the Carol screenplay was written by Emmy-nominated screenwriter Phyllis Nagy. This trailer also brings up the confusion earlier this year around whether Blanchett had dated women or not (she hasn’t, she clarified).
