In an essay for xoJane, Chiara de Blasio, daughter of NYC mayor Bill de Blasio, writes, "As the only person who can diagnose myself, I believe that I was born with the disease of addiction." But she's doing well: "For the first time in my short life, I feel steady."
Writings like this give me ambivalent anxiety. I am all for first hand accounts of addiction and recovery. At the same time, I get anxious when people go around talking about how great things are shortly after starting the recovery process. There is a threatening relapse or other self imposed harm coming around the corner.
