Jacintha Saldanha, the hospital nurse who was duped by a prank phone call from two Australian DJs posing as Queen Elizabeth and Prince Charles, has reportedly committed suicide. Saldhana was a duty nurse working reception because of a staff shortage; she patched the DJs through to Kate's nurse, who unwittingly gave the "royals" an on-air update on Kate's condition.

Saldhana was found "just yards" away from King Edward VII's Hospital; the death is not considered suspicious at this time.

The hospital has released a statement:

It is with very deep sadness that we confirm the tragic death of a member of our nursing staff, Jacintha Saldanha.

Jacintha has worked at the King Edward VII's Hospital for more than four years. She was an excellent nurse and well-respected and popular with all of her colleagues.

We can confirm that Jacintha was recently the victim of a hoax call to the hospital. The hospital had been supporting her throughout this difficult time.

Saldhana leaves behind her husband and two daughters.

I'll preface this by saying that this is, indeed, very sad.

I will go on to potentially sound like a total asshole: it seems clear that this poor woman was not well to begin with. Because I don't think anyone goes from well-balanced individual to "I should die for what I've done!" It was an honest mistake and the extreme reaction speaks to an underlying emotional state and rashness that would indicate a history of some sort of mental illness. *scoots out of armchair*

This is, of course, assuming that this mistake was the motivation for her suicide. For all we know it could be completely unrelated.
