Heartbreaking: Father Murdered Son For Disrupting Video Games, Netflix

24-year-old Cody Wygant was playing video games when his infant son began making too much noise, interfering with Wygant’s quality time with his Xbox. Instead of attending to his son’s needs, Wygant — who was the child’s primary caregiver — chose to suffocate him instead. Then he went back to the television (which can be turned off if it is too loud, making it much easier to handle than a baby.)

It appears that Wygant didn’t intend to kill his son, only put him to sleep. According to to KRCR News, Wygant first covered the boy’s nose and mouth for three to four minutes, and then, when the child had passed out, put him in his playpen where he covered the boy’s body and head with bedding, leaving 16-month-old Daymeon without air. By the time Wygant checked on his son five hours later (after watching several episodes of Fringe) Daymeon was blue and unresponsive. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Officials are flabbergasted that a father could kill his child in this way. Officials have also obviously not read the news since yesterday, because this kind of shit happens far too frequently and needs to be stopped.

“It is inconceivable that a father could kill his infant son – it just baffles the mind,” Sheriff Jeff Dawsy said. “Our only sense of relief now comes from knowing that we did exactly what we needed to do to bring justice to him swiftly. Our prayers go out to those who knew and loved Daymeon.”

I am also at a loss for words with this case. It’s so hard to believe that a parent could be so negligent and self-absorbed that they would rather put their child in danger than abandon their video games (You can’t just abandon a live raid, man!) or pause their episode of Fringe. Dude, I get it, Olivia Dunham is awesome and I binge-watched that show in a week, but the entire thing is on Netflix Instant and will always be waiting for you. I can’t even imagine the thought process that must happen in order for someone to weigh their options and decide that holding their hand over their infant’s airways is a more viable option than pausing the fucking entertainment machine to soothe their child’s tears.

Wygant, who has an extensive arrest record (his crimes include trespassing and rape) is currently being held without bail and has been charged with 3rd degree murder and child neglect. His other child, a three-month-old girl, has been removed from the home Wygant shares with his girlfriend (name not released) and has been placed in the custody of child and family services.
