Horrible Congressman Suggests Shooting Senators to Get Budget Bill Passed

You know how every time a Republican politician says or does something mindblowingly stupid or offensive, we shake our heads and think it can't possibly get any worse? Well, of course, we're always wrong. GOP legislators seem to have a supernatural ability to constantly come up with new and shittier things to say. The latest example came earlier this week from Rep. John Sullivan of Oklahoma. He was at a town hall meeting and started whining about how the Senate would not pass Rep. Paul Ryan's budget. Here's his 110% certifiably terrible way of explaining how he might accomplish such a worthy legislative goal (starts at around the 1:00 mark above):

Like I said, after this last election, the first order of business is pass a budget. Now, I believe that. I supported the Paul Ryan budget and sent it over to the Senate. Now I live with some Senators, I yell at them all the time, I grabbed one of them the other day and shook him and I'd love to get them to vote for it — boy I'd love that. You know but other than me going over there with a gun and holding it to their head and maybe killing a couple of them, I don't think they're going to listen unless they get beat.

Oh, really? Yeah, that might be totally folksy and charming if a) it wasn't highly inappropriate to suggest killing your fellow lawmakers (or really anyone), and b) DO YOU NOT REMEMBER THAT ONE OF YOUR COLLEAGUES WAS JUST SHOT LAST YEAR? IN THE HEAD?

Sorry, deep breaths. Seriously, what is wrong with these guys? As you might imagine, not many people appreciated Sullivan's remarks, and he was forced to apologize quickly and, of course, very sincerely. Here's what his spokesperson told Talking Points Memo:

The Congressman offers his sincere apologies to anyone he offended and for using a poor choice of words to make his point - which was that Senate Democrats are refusing to pass a budget or even vote on the 28 House passed jobs bills. Millions of Americans are hurting — the Congressman feels their pain, and does not want his comments to deflect attention away the serious issues our country faces today, and he certainly does not condone any form of violence as a means to fix what is broken in Washington.

Then maybe stop grabbing the guys that you live with and yelling at them—he sounds like the worst roommate ever—and don't act like it was just a poor choice of words. It was a shitty thing to say. Period. Full Stop. Instead of this half-assed apology, Rep. Sullivan, maybe you should consider atoning for your sin by making a sizable, like bigger than the size of your ego, contribution to the Gabrielle Giffords Hunger Action Fund.
