Have You Read the Freaks and Geeks Oral History Yet? Why Not? Are You Trapped in a Well or Something?

The first really "expensive" thing I ever ever ever bought for myself—my first investment piece—was the Freaks and Geeks special edition yearbook DVD box set. I still cherish that shit, Gollum-style, and I've probably watched those 18 perfect episodes more than any other show (except for the British Office, obv, and that episode of Degrassi: TNG where Manny gets a thong and an ugly hat and becomes "hot" because it never stopped playing on The N in 2003). A few months ago I met Busy Phillips by accident at a restaurant and she said she'd read something I wrote and I am still deceased from it.

ANYHOO. In Vanity Fair's new comedy issue (guest edited by Judd Apatow), there's a lengthy and detailed oral history of the show with Apatow, Paul Feig, and most of the cast. HAPPY BIRTHDAY-CHRISTMAS-SUMMER-VACAY, SELF.

Here's a sample:

PAUL FEIG: John and Linda would do this thing where they would talk to each other like brother and sister, just on the set when they were waiting around. They kind of got on each other's nerves, but it was their game. That's when I was like, God, this cast is so good.

JOHN FRANCIS DALEY: Linda and I spent a lot of time between scenes giving each other a hard time. I probably had a bit of a crush on her too, which you don't want to hear when we're playing brother and sister. But it's hard to not have a crush on her.

BUSY PHILIPPS: I was always watching Linda, trying to figure out what she was doing. Doing scenes with her I was always intimidated, and I feel like you can feel that in Kim, even though she's always trying to be intimidating.

But you should obviously read the whole thing. I'll be over here, rolling around on the floor and giggle-weeping.

2 Good 2 Be 4Gotten: An Oral History of Freaks and Geeks [Vanity Fair]

I pretty much watch this scene every single day. It's so perfect. The song, the characters, the reactions, how real it all feels, Sam's cute little dance, how happy Lindsay looks when she sees Sam dancing, etc. I tear up and smile all the way through.
