At what point is experimental electronic music just, like, folk songs? "Paranormal," the new song from New York producer/singer James K (aka Jamie Krasner), seems to me like an exploration of that question, by using synths that sound similar to musical saws and layering her voice to sensual perpendicular octaves.
The track's not structured traditionally, and seems more like a sound experiment, but it emits a vibe that's really visceral and organic. I have no idea what she is singing, though (that's probably part of the point). My armchair translation from a few listens: "Uh, if you is, how raygun, our prob is heaven, how cool, ooh, you, ooh, mmm." So, those are probably not the accurate lyrics? Either way, I like settling into it, like a comfy easy chair with a warm blanket. So cozy.
"Paranormal," which makes its debut here, is the b-side to the "SOKIT" single, her first solo release on smart underground label UNO NYC, who also brought us eventual stars like Arca, Mykki Blanco, and Fatima al Qadiri. (Previously, Krasner released music on UNO as one-half of SETH, a noise-pop duo with the producer/drummer Gobby. Also, she lent really pretty pop vocals to this song by Physical Therapy.) "SOKIT" is available at iTunes, Bandcamp, and also 7" vinyl because that's how we do things these days.
