For Fifty Grand, Scarlett O’Hara’s Breakfast Gown Can Be All Yours

Latest

If you have a huge pile of money just sitting on your kitchen table collecting cockroaches, you might want to consider putting in a bid for the blue accordion-pleated silk sleeping gown Scarlett O’Hara was wearing when Bonnie Blue Butler falls off the pony (and, spoiler alert, dies) in Gone with the Wind. How else will you ever fulfill your dreams of one day becoming an eccentric old person who drinks bourbon out of a goblet and speaks only in movie lines uttered before 1950?

The gown is going on auction at Bonham’s in New York this November, and it’s expected to go for between $50,000 and $70,000. You’re good for that, right? The reason the gown is so expensive, according to Glamour (I mean, other than the fact that it’s clearly a supernatural totem of bad luck woven by the Furies — R.I.P., Bonnie Blue), is that it went missing for 40 years, and was given up for lost. It had been given to a seamstress who’d worked on the Gone with the Wind set, and she took it home, presumably to terrify any misbehaving children in her family. The gown didn’t resurface until the 80s when, just in time for the horror genre’s full flowering, a memorabilia collector bought it until the day it could be pawned off for a tidy profit on some unsuspecting Gone with the Wind fan.
