Female Merit Badges Represent "Rites Of Passage"

Artist Mary Yaeger has created a series of “Female Merit Badges,” which are designed to represent “female “rites of passage’ as well as the myriad physical manipulations women undergo to achieve cultural ideals of beauty.”

The badges resemble Girl Scout badges, but illustrate such things as birth control pills, pregnancy tests, and breast exams. “The miniature scale and meticulous, hand-embroidered surfaces convey my impressions of growing up female in our culture,” Yaeger says. [Mary Yaeger] via [Neatorama]
