Female Chimps Are Total Bitches to Each Other

Latest

Perhaps demonstrating just how closely related primates are to humans, a new study finds that female chimpanzees are much more aggressive and “negative” when communicating with other lady chimps, and then switch it up and get all nice and apologetic and submissive when communicating with males.

The study, conducted by doctoral student Nicole Scott from the University of Minnesota, analyzed the “different gesturing strategies” of chimps and found gender differences in their communication styles. While the female chimps use different gestures depending on whether they’re communication with males or females, male chimps behave the same with everyone, regardless of sex. As Scott pointed out, “there is a belief in the field that males are more aggressive than females.” But her work indicates that females are aggressive, too.
