Every Invasive Medical Procedure Should Be Complicated with an Equally Invasive Ultrasound Mandate

Illustration for article titled Every Invasive Medical Procedure Should Be Complicated with an Equally Invasive Ultrasound Mandate

Getting your gallbladder removed shouldn't require an ultrasound, a lengthy description of your innards and a 24-hour waiting period, but neither should a lot of things and, to be frank, if those gallbladder floozies of the world really wanted to avoid jumping through bureaucratic hoops for their health care, they should have made better life choices, like not eating fatty foods and, most importantly, not living in Texas.

DISCUSSION

The thing about the abortion regulation laws are that they presume that the doctor performing the abortion wouldn't normally take these steps - that they don't discuss the options, or perform an ultrasound or make sure the patient has really made up her mind before performing the abortion. Anti-abortion lawmakers and activists see doctors who perform abortions as being crazed baby killers who push every pregnant woman they see to have an abortion. In reality, I don't think an OB/GYN would even think about performing an abortion without getting an ultrasound first.
