The murder conviction of Brendan Dassey, one of the defendants depicted in Netflix’s documentary series Making a Murder, has been overturned, according to the Associated Press. A U.S. District Court judge ordered that he be released from custody within 90 days.

In 2007, Dassey was convicted of helping his uncle Steven Avery murder Teresa Halbach, and received a life sentence with no parole for 41 years.
While Making a Murderer raised questions about the convictions of Steven Avery and Dassey, Dassey’s conviction was particularly outrageous after videos surfaced of his own counsel leaving the room to allow authorities to coerce a confession. Dassey was 16 years old at the time of Halbach’s death.
DISCUSSION
