Laurence Sunderland, father of teen sailor Abby Sunderland, has admitted that he signed on to do a reality TV show just weeks after Abby set off on her solo sail. However, he maintains that her trip "wasn't a stunt." [NYP]
Well she DID have her older brother who did this before, and I don't think there were any reality shows for him. He seemed so genuinely into it, too, I remember after his voyage he said his next goal was Mt. Everest.
I like this family, I think its cool that they are having adventures like this, but I just don't agree with them allowing their kids to sail by themselves around the world. Obvs not my choice, but I just don't think I would be able to do that. So many things can extremely wrong out there, so many bad people that are in international waters.
When I did an MOCC course so I could drive National Park boats the phrase the instructors kept reminding us was "How many things can go wrong in 3o seconds on a boat." And trust me, a lot of shit can go down very quickly out in the ocean.
