Check Your Vertebrate Privilege: Cephalopods Are People, Too

Latest

Bet you terrestrial-centric bigots didn’t realize it, but today just so happens to be Fish Amnesty Day, which is billed as “a day to recognize fish as living animals with rights and in need of protection just the same as other vertebrates.”

Oh, really? This baby cuttlefish (which is basically one of those blinking jelly toys you get out of a bowling alley arcade) has rights, too, and it’s important that we recognize cephalopods on Fish Amnesty Day if for no other reason than that they’re supposed to be pretty smart. Like, supervillain smart. Nobody needs smart sea monsters scuttling around the ocean floor all pissed-off because we’re too busy reveling in our backbone privilege. Cuttlefish, octopuses, squids, and nautlises are all people, too.
