Charleston Shooting Suspect Dylann Storm Roof Reportedly Arrested

Latest

The suspect in the mass shooting at a black church in Charleston, South Carolina has been identified as 21-year-old Dylann Storm Roof. A Columbia, South Carolina news station reported moments ago that he’s been arrested.

As several news outlets have pointed out, Roof’s Facebook profile shows him wearing a jacket decorated with flags from apartheid-era South Africa and “Rhodesia,” as Zimbabwe was called when it was controlled by a repressive white government. Roof’s uncle told the New York Daily News he’d recently received a gun for his birthday.

Roof was reportedly driving a dark-colored 2000 Hyundai Elantra. He had at least one previous arrest this year, on a drug charge. One of the survivors reported to a family member that Roof reloaded his gun five times inside the church. He also reportedly said to a victim, “I have to do it. You rape our women and you’re taking over our country. And you have to go.”
