Catholic University Drops Student Health Insurance Rather Than Pay for Birth Control

Franciscan University of Steubenville in Ohio has made the very interesting choice to stop offering health insurance coverage to its students come this fall rather than have to comply with the federal mandate that says its insurance plan must provide free contraception. The university said in a statement,

The Obama Administration has mandated that all health insurance plans must cover "women's health services" including contraception, sterilization, and abortion-causing medications as part of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA). Up to this time, Franciscan University has specifically excluded these services and products from its student health insurance policy, and we will not participate in a plan that requires us to violate the consistent teachings of the Catholic Church on the sacredness of human life.

Nice scare quotes around "women's health services." But let's get this straight: it's consistent with Catholic Church teaching to deny health care to keep already living people alive if it means you're not remotely associated with even a single whore pill prescription being handed out? That is so very pro-life.

In addition to canceling student insurance coverage, the university is no longer going to require that any undergrads have insurance because as their vice president says, "We didn't want to put them in a situation where they would violate their conscience." That's nice of you. Really it is, as long as you're cool with putting them in a situation where they can't get easily get treatment for potentially life-threatening infections or broken bones.

Fortunately for the 2,800 students of the university, most of them get their insurance elsewhere. Only 200 of them are on the university's plan, and to those unlucky few, the university says,

We encourage you to decide how you are going to provide for accidents or illnesses requiring visits to physicians, health clinics, or the hospital emergency room while you are a student here.

In other words, you're on your own, suckers. We're more than happy to bring you all into the world, but we want no part of making sure you survive once you're here.

Okay, I'm going to ask the question and it's going to sound snarky but that isn't my intent because I don't know: do Catholic universities allow military programs, like ROTC, on campus? I know that Catholicism has a "just war" clause or something, but why didn't they speak out and make grand gestures when we went to war with Iraq (a war that the Pope said was unjust)? I mean, yes, I get that they are saying a fertilized egg is a fully formed soul and whatever, but the soldiers and civilians that are killed over in Iraq every day are fully formed humans too.
