Catholic Bishops Pressured Komen to Excommunicate Planned Parenthood

Cloyingly pink breast cancer charity Susan G. Komen for the Cure's decision to stop providing grants to Planned Parenthood immediately raised eyebrows. The charity claimed a new rule dictated they refrain from funding organizations under investigation, but then it was revealed that Planned Parenthood was the only organization affected by the rule. The charity then claimed that they were simply trying to streamline services, but it was obvious that the organization's internal anti-abortion voices had fought for defunding. Now, it appears that a very large, very vocal anti-choice group had been urging the decision along for years — the Catholic Church.

The Church, through its various hospitals, universities, and charities, collects millions in grants from Susan G. Komen for the Cure every year, but in many dioceses in the US, church leaders have barred parochial schools from contributing to Komen and discouraged individual participation due to Komen's ties to Planned Parenthood (Komen doles out between $500,000 and $700,000 to the health care provider per year).

Internal Komen documents obtained by Reuters reveal that since 2005, the Church has pressured the organization to stop funding Planned Parenthood, but in 2010 after Cardinal Timothy Dolan became the President of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops, the pressure intensified. Dolan's made an extremely socially conservative agenda his priority and has fought tooth and nail against any government mandates that require employers to cover contraception, sterilization, or other ladycentric procedures the celibate male women's health experts in the Church's hierarchy deem sinful.

Blatant moral hypocrisy of accepting grants while discouraging donations aside, this seems like a classic case of throwing the baby (or zygote) out with the bathwater. Is advocating for the denial of breast cancer screenings for poor women consistent with Catholic moral teachings? Who would Jesus defund?

Dolan is a punk. And since he has his nose up Benedict's ass, I dislike him even more. When he was elevated to Cardinal, there were articles talking about how the likelihood of him being taken for Holy See after Ratzinger were getting higher and higher. Good. Get thee hence, and good riddance.

But seriously, was I the only one that thought about Kathryn's cocaine cross when they saw the picture above?
