Cara Delevingne reemerged on the fashion scene this week in a series of advertisements for Saint Laurent, which many interpreted as a return to modeling after having quit. But on the evening of March 31, the model-actress publicly stated that she had merely paused to attend to her depression.

As New York reports, “Delevingne has discussed modeling’s negative effects on her health before — at one point, she suffered from the stress-induced autoimmune disease psoriasis, which causes patches of red, itchy scabs.” However, expressing the labor and the physical cost of modeling does not necessarily signal condemnation. Delevingne clarifies on Twitter, “I never said I was quitting modeling. I do not blame the fashion industry for anything.”

She then composed a series of tweets articulating her struggle with depression, and explaining how attempting to lose herself in her work had had pernicious effects.

To be so frank and public about one’s mental health remains difficult and potentially stigmatizing. Props to Delevingne for coming forward nonetheless.
