Bride Flees Wedding After Groom Proves He Can't Do Simple Math

In Depth

When a marriage is arranged, it’s not uncommon for a bride to only meet her groom on their wedding day. In order to make sure that the man she was marrying had an education, one bride in the Uttar Pradesh state of India gave her intended a math test on their wedding day. He failed spectacularly.

The Associated Press reports that the bride, who has remained unnamed, asked the groom to add 15 and six. When the groom said 17 instead of 23, the bride knew the wedding was not to be and she ran, leaving the groom behind to do a new equation: two minus one.

The bride’s father said that his daughter felt misled about the groom’s education and pointed out that the man should have been able to answer the question because any first grader could. And even though the groom’s family tried their best to get the bride to return, she refused. Good for her.

Local police became involved in the matter and, after the bride and groom returned all presents their families had gifted each other during the courtship, the wedding was officially off. The bride is back on the market and she’s got me thinking about whether I should be quizzing my own partner when he gets home tonight so that I’m sure I’m with the right person. Problem is, every time I try to do that he just rolls his eyes and walks out of the room. Wait, is that a problem?
