Jamie Lynne Grumet, the mother seen breastfeeding her 3-year-old on this week's cover of Time was on Today this morning, with a very calm, down-to-earth attitude about the story. She says she knew what she was getting into when she posed (there's a behind-the-scences piece about how the cover was shot, for interested parties) and clarifies that she doesn't actually feed her son while he is standing on a stool: "This isn't how we breastfeed at home — it's more of a cradling, nurturing situation." She also insisted: "It's not right for everybody." Aww, she seems so nice. No one tell her about the alternate covers or the meme, okay?
I watched the interview with the mom and dr this morning. Here are my takeaways:
*She was a little Mrs. Duggard like when she talked about her parental purpose and responsibility of being a stay-at-home mom.
*Her child seemed REALLY big for his age, and was rather clingy and fussy throughout the interview (yes, it was TV, I get it, but she kept saying how well-behaved he was even when he went to grab her hair and wouldn't go to his dad when she asked him to).
*She has an African American son who is 6. Can you imagine if TIME showed her with him on her breast?!
*The child is now "self-weaning," which I don't really understand how that works and they didn't really explain.
