Bishops Still Sulking Over Birth Control Coverage

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops apparently doesn't understand the meaning of the word "compromise" or that crazy theory known as "separation of church and state."

Although the bishops acknowledged that the Obama administration's revised contraception plan was a "first step," they still have "two serious objections" to the policy, and they're still planning to fight against it. First, they're pissed that the plan includes a "nationwide mandate of insurance coverage of sterilization and contraception, including some abortifacients," causing "grave moral concern." They're also upset that the plan would require insurers to provide contraceptive coverage for free, meaning that self-insuring religious employers and religious employees would not be exempt from the mandate. These issues, the bishops said, are "unacceptable and must be corrected."

It's unlikely that Obama will alter the plan again, especially because a lot of other Catholic leaders have voiced satisfaction with the changes, so the bishops should start getting used to the fact that, horror of horrors, women won't have spend their hard-earned money to prevent unplanned pregnancies and receive other crucial health benefits.
