Beauty 101: Make It In The Kitchen Edition

Latest

Over the past few weeks, I’ve received several requests from readers hoping to have a discussion on homemade/all-natural beauty products. So let’s have it, shall we?

As one reader writes:

I saw a blog post somewhere recently — possibly here on Jezebel — in which the writer said she only uses hair/body products she would eat, such as washing her face with honey. I love this idea and would love to see a post with resources for different skin types, hair types, etc.

Also, something to keep in mind, please:

Just a quick request to people sharing “recipes” – can you include a bit about your skin/hair type and maybe even your location (in terms of climate)? Unless you’re certain the advice is universally applicable. What works for you won’t necessarily be appropriate for others.

Do you have a homemade/natural beauty concoction you swear by? Olive oil as a moisturizer? Aspirin-honey face masks? Coffee as an exfoliant? Tea tree oil to fight dandruff? Milk and honey baths, Cleopatra style? The possibilities are somewhat endless, as creativity and tradition often combine to create a simple, cheap alternative to store-bought beauty fixes. If you have a “recipe” to share with your fellow readers, please leave it in the comments below, or email it to me with “DIY” in the subject line. A roundup of responses will be posted tomorrow.
