On Sunday, after announcing last week they’d be creating a one-of-a-kind doll to pay homage to tween queen Zendaya’s instant classic Oscars look, Barbie debuted the miniature plastic pop star to rave reviews.
The more I look at this miniaturized toy version of Coleman (Zendaya’s last name), the more I’m convinced of this project’s perfect execution. In February, Zendaya made headlines with her impassioned and articulate response to Giuliana Rancic, who had felt the need to comment that the teenager “smells like patchouli oil or weed” while scrutinizing her awards show look on E!’s Fashion Police.
It’s clear why Mattel would want to honor Coleman with a doll of her own, but the care with which they did so is marvelous. There’s a meticulous attention to detail in the Zendaya Barbie’s design. As Jazmine Hughes pointed out on Twitter, even the pop star’s baby hairs were beautifully rendered.
