For non-English classics (that are within the 20th century) I recommend reading Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Isabel Allende, Jorge Amado, Jose Saramago. I recommend German lit, too, like Kafka. Perfume by Patrick Susskind is a great contemporary German novel set in a pre-modern era. Read more
