I hate that we automatically defer to some black or white default in these stories—it's not that we're saying "the cops are to blame." I think that's absurd. But see my reply to another poster above. It's not about "blaming" the cops. It's about looking at a terrible accident that involved the police and asking what… Read more
John Wickham, owner of Elysium, was on the upper level of the Mohawk, and told the Statesman he saw a car coming down the street fast with a police car in pursuit. He saw the car hit several people. He said he did not see the police car hit anyone. Read more

Thanks! I would say this about being defensive about "police blaming" in this instance—keep in mind that police chases have been banned in some places because of the terrible consequences that have occurred. I don't like "police bashing" but there are certainly instances you can point to where the idea of having tons… Read more
No, not "blaming the police." I don't think I used the word "police" in my comment, and in fact, I deliberately avoided it for the exact reasons you are pointing out. My comment expressly refers to the fact that there was a chase on those streets, caused by the exact circumstances you are describing. That's what… Read more
That's the mystery to me. I thought it already was. If I'm out and about, I won't go near alcohol if I'm driving. (And we all know how much I luvz the alcohol.) In Texas, it's a $10,000 fine for popping over the limit on a DUI test. They revoke your license. There's jail time. That's a hefty deterrent, BUT that's not… Read more
I didn't want to editorialize in this story, but my jaw dropped when I first read Wickham's statement. A high speed car chase on those streets is already horrifying enough, but during SXSW? All the streets are blocked off and there are literally thousands of people walking everywhere. Really scary stuff. Read more

Agreed, but just to be clear the girl in this story was absolutely not charged with a crime. The citation mentioned was for her alleged john. Read more

I'm betting you are 100 percent correct on that. I was watching a Cops episode last night (PLEASE DON'T JUDGE ME) and they had this poor 18 year old girl with a fuckton of priors in prostitution crying her eyes out about her shitty upbringing (the cop had asked her, probably for the benefit of the cameras, what her… Read more
And in California, the age of consent is 18. So I'm assuming that he got a ticket for solicitation of a prostitute (maybe???) probably because they had not actually engaged in any police activity before the police got there. That may be why he was let go with just a citation. Because yeah it's against the law in… Read more
