Can't we get a Beth Ditto doll or something?
I believe she was using marijuana as an example because it's something that is rather cross cultural- poor kids, black kids, white kids, rich kids, they all smoke weed. The ones that get busted and jailed for it tend to be disproportionately poor and black (and hispanic.) Kids of color are more likely to be tried as… Read more
Love, love, love this. It is not a reach. The RS cover is upsetting to people because they think that cover should represent the pinnacle of achievement, they say, but you know that this would not be an issue if he were heinously ugly and evil-looking - that wouldn't be glamorizing at all. Part of the hysteria is… Read more
I saw that surrender picture with no context and thought it was some DJ at a Color Run after party. This kid does not have the look of evil we have been conditioned to recognize and it makes people uncomfortable.
I'm struggling to see the lionization here, since there are those huge letters of "Bomber" and "Monster" right on the front page.
"I firmly believe the main reason that the U.S. has become an unapologetic incarceral state over the last 30 years is because we refuse to think of criminal defendants as human beings." Read more
Thank you, Meagan. You capture so much of what I've been feeling about this cover. Read more
The cool and easy way to know that the people at Gitmo haven't blown themselves up is that you generally can't recover from blowing yourself up; at least not enough to be incarcerated in a brutal offshore American prison.

Musberger's comments were about a bystander at an event he was covering. It was lecherous and cheesy, but I am not sure you really believe that cutting down someone who was dominating their chosen sport (by calling attention to their looks) is nearly as offensive. This broadcaster isn't going to be taken off the air,… Read more
Just a little added context from a local Oklahoma gossip blogs and local paper. Not saying this whole thing isn't stupid and offensive, but at least for once it's not state sanctioned. Which is a relief, because believe me, Oklahoma does PLENTY to be occasionally embarrassed about. Read more
As a Clevelander I assure you, the Cleveland Indians do get a lot of flak (as they should) and "Chief Wahoo" is atrocious. And I mean, the Chicago Blackhawks just won the Stanley Cup.
As someone who has actually re-walked the Trail of Tears of my tribe (Choctaw) just last year I also would like to point out that there wasn't just one route for removal of all tribes. Each tribe had different removal routes so it's not even possible to walk THE Trail of Tears... you would only be walking part of it.
Ha! I'll call off my Oklahomies.
I think it feels like a really bad idea given our current culture of stereotyping and oppressing Native Americans. We'll do things like this in order to get an Olympic bid, while still using stereotypical and offensive images as mascots for our sports teams, ignoring the high levels of poverty, alcoholism, and poor… Read more
Yeah, I live and teach in Tulsa. Nearly every single one of my students claims part Native American ancestry. Do I teach on a reservation? Do I teach in a school that is more significantly serving Native American students than other area schools? No. That's the story of Oklahoma, that so many people can trace their… Read more
