Richard Retta is one of those shouty dickwads who stands outside of abortion clinics and tries to convince women not to go in. About a year ago, he tried to physically block a woman from entering a clinic in the DC area, which is a legal no-no. And today, a judge has denied his request that charges against him be dropped.
According to the complaint filed by the Justice Department in July, Retta's one of the most vocal and obstructive protesters at the DC-area clinic. The incident that found him in violation of the law occurred last January, when a woman attempting to enter the Planned Parenthood facility was met with Retta's dumb ass, shouting things about how she shouldn't kill her baby. He then followed her down the walkway and eventually blocked the woman's entrance to the facility. According to the complaint, the client was eventually able to gain access to the clinic with "the extraordinary assistance and intervention of another Clinic escort and staff."
This is not only annoying, but illegal. The Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances, passed in 1994, makes the act of blockading abortion clinic entrances a crime. According to Raw Story, a pro-life group claims that Retta's "annoy the shit out of people" tactics have saved 350 babies. And I bet he personally financially supports each and every one of them!
Retta asked that a judge dismiss the charges against him, because he said the government didn't sufficiently show that the woman he blocked was there to receive reproductive health services. The judge disagreed, saying that what mattered wasn't what the woman was doing, but what Retta thought the woman was doing. And nothing says "I think you're about to have an abortion!" then screaming "DON'T KILL YOUR BABY!" outside of a Planned Parenthood.
