Ansel Elgort Has Signed a Record Deal To Make 'Groovy House Music' As DJ Ansolo

Latest

Ansel Elgort, movie star and known sex-haver, is adding another job listing to his LinkedIn profile: professional DJ. The multitalented 21-year-old has been signed by Island Records, where he will dive “deeper into dance music” under the name DJ Ansolo.

It would be wonderful if this were a fake news item, or some kind of desperate attempt to get more people interested in seeing We Are Your Friends, but, alas, it’s the honest-to-god truth.

Writes Billboard:

…In January, Elgort [said,] “I’m going to battle with credibility my whole career as Ansolo, because people will just say I’m an actor trying to get into this,” he said. “But I have no need to get into this. My acting is going great. I don’t want to make more money. If I did, I wouldn’t be making groovy house music.”

When asked by Rolling Stone to describe his particular sound, DJ Ansolo used so, so many words. He just wouldn’t stop using words.

I suppose everything today is described as progressive house. The definition of progressive house today is so broad. I like to say it’s groovy house music, or groovy, driving club music. I’m starting to make some records that aren’t just club music but are catchy, vocal kind of records with a lot of club-inspired elements. But it’s real club music, not just pop club music. It’s such a hard thing to say what genre or form of dance music it is. Now you say “deep house” and there are, like, 10 different kinds of deep house. It’s blasphemy, and the real deep-house artists get kind of mad and are like, “Oh, Oliver Heldens isn’t deep house.” But other people are like, “Oliver Heldens is deep house.”

DJ Ansolo superfan Ellie Shechet could not be reached for comment, but I assume her thoughts are something like this.
