Anonymous Threatens to Expose Iggy Azalea's Sex Tape, Demands Apology

Latest

Anonymous, the digital crusaders who have doxxed rapists and Darren Wilson (before we knew Darren Wilson) have found their newest target: Iggy Azalea.

It seems Anonymous is not incredibly impressed with Azalea’s antics of “misappropriating black culture, insulting peaceful protesters, and making light of Eric Garner’s death.” They have stated, they want her to apologize to Azealia Banks (after Iggy’s response to Banks’ response to her) and the protesters, and have threatened to release proof of an alleged sex tape, possibly the same one her ex Jefe Wine was shopping around a few months ago.

Wait, what?! A sex tape?! Are you fucking kidding me?!

[Update: This appears to be from Anonymous, though since Anonymous is a loose collective, TheAnonMessage could simply be an off-shoot.] Jesus. First of all, it seems like Anonymous is trying to punish Iggy Azalea for, at best, being an idiot. After Azealia Banks appeared on Hot 97, complaining and calling out Iggy Azalea less as a crappy artist and more as a symptom of a crappy industry (and the crappiness of the Grammys) that doesn’t reward black artists, Iggy Azalea hit back in a series of tweets with some real proof that she. does not. get it.

“Special msg for banks: There are many black artists succeeding in all genres. The reason you haven’t is because of your piss poor attitude. Your inability to be responsible for your own mistakes, bullying others, the inability to be humble or self control. It’s YOU! You created your own unfortunate situation by being a bigot and don’t have the mental capacity to realize yet. Probably never will. Now! rant, Make it racial! make it political! Make it whatever but I guarantee it won’t make you likable & THATS why ur crying on the radio.”

Anyone else see the hair-tearing tragedy of a white woman who staked a claim in a genre of music that is rooted in race and politics, telling another artist not to make it about race and politics. Or the adorable irony of Iggy Azalea calling Azealia Banks a “bigot?”

Anyway, yeah, Iggy’s ignorant as fuck and a problematic figure in our current pop culture, but just because she Azalea has leeched her style and persona off black culture does not give anyone the right to release any part of her sex tape. It doesn’t matter if Anonymous isn’t showing nudity. Using a woman’s own sexuality to punish her is plain disgusting in its own right. Iggy Azalea may have insulted protesters, her career may be demonstrative of our society’s preference and reverence for white success despite black talent and work, but Iggy herself and her alleged sex tape have nothing to do with the rampant police violence that our country is attempting to come to terms with. Stop holding a woman’s sex life hostage and using it to derail a crucial conversation we need to have in this country. I mean, is this some kind of prank? I’m seriously asking.

And also, as a political move, targeting Iggy won’t do shit. Even if her career is ruined, Iggy is a symptom of a much bigger problem in the music industry and our culture at large. This whole thing will only make race relations and police brutality in the US a spectacle, not the process it needs to be.
