Because the state of Mississippi has not been embarrassed enough by the shenanigans of its lawmakers, one of the Jackson's finest has introduced a bill to the state legislature that would change the name of the Gulf of Mexico... to the Gulf of America. I bet he also drives a truck that shoots flames from its tailpipe.

Democratic Representative Stephen Holland's House Bill 150 reads, "For all official purposes within the State of Mississippi, the body of water that is located directly south of Hancock, Harrison and Jackson Counties shall be known as the 'Gulf of America.'" Well, that's pretty straightforward.

Why Holland thought this was a good idea remains a mystery. He's been incommunicado since the bill's introduction, and it's difficult to see what changing the name of a body of water would do to help anything. Is he resentful of Mexico because of a bad travel experience? Is he a xenophobe? Or is he propped up by British Petroleum, who could feasibly benefit from legislation because it could exempt them from completing their cleanup job? Who knows?

I say, let's go one step further and call it "Gulf of the Yoo-Nighted-Motherfucking States of the Stars and Stripes Forever Amen." But will that fit on an elementary school map?
