The final episodes of the ABC soaps will air in September 2011 and January 2012, respectively. Each has been on the air for around four decades.

As the LA Times notes, All My Children brought us the “first same-sex kiss between two women as well as its first lesbian wedding and the first coming-out story for a transgender character.” One Life To Live “was among the first in daytime television to cover interracial romance, gang violence and teen pregnancy.” In their place: Shows co-hosted by Tim Gunn and Mario Batali on food and makeovers. Variety says of the show that includes Gunn, “Each weekday, the show will focus on one woman’s weight-loss efforts over the span of five months.”
