Women's legal status in Tunisia is unique in the Arab world as they benefit since 1956 from their own status allowing strict equality between men and women. Tunisians vote on October 25 in legislative and presidential polls in which the ruling party of long-time President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali is set to come out victorious. Though three candidates are running against him, Ben Ali, who has been in power for 22 years, is heavily tipped to be re-elected for a fifith term, with critics saying his grip on the country has effectively crushed any real opposition to him.
