Deborah Anderson, a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Boston University's School of Medicine, had heard the urban legend that Coca-Cola could be used as a contraceptive. So she and her team decided to test it in a lab. They found that not only is Coke a spermicide, but that Diet Coke (for some reason) works best. The team won an Ig Nobel Prize, the annual award given by the Annals of Improbable Research magazine for oddball but often surprisingly practical scientific achievements. "We're thrilled to win an Ig Nobel, because the study was somewhat of a parody in the first place," says Dr. Anderson, who adds that she does not recommend using Coke for birth control purposes. Mountain Dew, on the other hand… Kidding! [MSNBC]
